Critical lobby
Kine Each week said “The brand new sturdy ‘crooks slip out’ is actually peopled that have a colorful assortment out-of essential and you will arresting characters, that, skilfully manipulated of the author and you will movie director, enable the film so you can tread liquid efficiently. It is simply into end up it begins to fall apart, although slap-upwards finale rescues it regarding ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have no higher challenge from inside the way of living off the extremely unattractive title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The movie moves at the an easy pace, the new conversation are slick and characterisations generally productive. Penis Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes head brand new cast expertly, since the detective is actually used significant aplomb by that person character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody about The Yorker listed “It terse and you will taut motion picture noir was based on the fresh new personal and you will elite group conflicts of one’s term character, the criminal genius (starred by the Knob Powell) about a fashionable unlawful casino. The film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess online game, to have mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) did at local casino and dated a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic script, brand new cast’s suavely managed gestures out-of love and you may menace, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can stylishly cocky photos (and his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really intricate spectacle a hidden classic of the category.” [ ten ]

Picture provides actions and you can suspense, and you may certain quick satisfies away from humor to incorporate flavor. Ace performances by the Manhood Powell, due to the fact a gaming domestic overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, once the a police inspector, as well as within the rating . Whilst patch employs a common development, new characterizations are new in addition to activities suitable so you can overbalance. Dialog was terse and you can relevant, preventing the sentimental, phoney touch. Uncommon camera basics come-along now and then to escalate interest and momentarily stop the attention. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing because the manager-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, amazing blogger and you may affiliate manufacturer, as well as aids in making it a softer design.” [ 11 ]

It is generally an issue of seeing Mr. Powell read their paces smartly when you are a huge throw out-of stars and you will stars offer him typical support. Evelyn Keyes performs the nice absolutely nothing woman who brings about the latest finest in him and you may Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen who gets him to the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually greasy as the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of in a position trip given that a weary cops inspector whom finally closes the scenario. Significant amounts of taking and you may smoking is carried out of the the concerned.” [ several ]
